Americas Overview

Although only nine journalists were killed in 2008 – down from 13 in 2007 and 15 in 2006 – it was another dangerous year for media professionals in the Americas. Five journalists were murdered in Mexico, and one each in Bolivia, Guatemala, Brazil and Venezuela. A further eight journalists were reported missing in Mexico. Others faced death threats and physical attacks as a result of their reporting on corruption, drug trafficking, human rights abuses and other issues. As a result, self-censorship was rampant.
